Green spaces
There is one thing I like about Southampton – the sports facilities.
I play a good number of sports, but in the last three days I have spent every evening at the same place but played a different sport.
We have one main sports centre and it’s massive: 2 Astroturf pitches, a gazillion tennis/netball courts, 1 full size athletics track used by Team GB, 3 cricket pitches, 1 golf course, 1 dry ski slope, 1 mountain bike course, 2 pubs and probably a load of other things that I’ve tried to destroy with off course golf shots but haven’t seen. All in one place. The yanks probably have one of these in every town, but in England where space is at a premium – this is unheard of.
There are also the Southampton University sports grounds (used by Pompey FC to train on), the Southampton Institute sports grounds, a whole load of rugby clubs (5 within a 4 mile radius of the city) who also cater for cricket in the summer. Southampton FC train up the road on their own pitches (near where frequent commentator Nath used to live and where the golfing buddy frequently hides in the bushes to stalk the players! I kid because I love)
In short, there is a lot of grass.
I get bad hay fever. I’m double dosing on my Boots own brand Clarityn, which according to the packet is a very bad thing to do and I should go to casualty. They can take me there when I die, until then I’ll keep going!
Of course, the council keep trying to sell bits of it off to build housing, but thankfully they never get permission to.
I hope it stays that way. It won't, but I can dream.
